I authored an EQ Research white paper on energy regulatory issues associated with recreational and medical marijuana cultivation. The burgeoning industry is causing challenges for utilities in planning for resource needs and reliability–in some states, marijuana cultivation may use around 1% of overall electricity. But because marijuana remains federally illegal, ensuring that energy use by the industry is efficient and renewable will require collaboration between utilities, public utility commissions, local governments, and trade associations. The white paper is available for download at EQ Research. We also produced a two-page executive summary and I posted a blog explaining my motivations for writing the paper.
